Beach Chair Yoga: Teaching a Private: December 20, 2020: Wailea, HI
Who knew beach chairs are better than yoga blocks? They measure at approximately the same height; they are infinitely more fun. A beach chair is synonymous with ease and joy.
The bigger point Is that the yoga will come through when you make the effort to look for solutions. Sages say the practice is designed to loosen our tight spots (sutra 2.1), and not only does this mean in the body (which, by the way a beach chair is awesome at), but also in the mind.
My Sunday yogi and I have significant barriors to yoga as usual. Social distance, unable to speak too loudly, no sharing of props, little shared experience together in these poses. While I’ve never taught a class using.a beach chair but I have taught hundreds using blocks. It’s only a short leap of faith a beach chair will work.
And beach chairs, he has!
Even more significant though, is that he wants to stretch. He wants to be more flexible, He’s interested in self care and radiant health. I want to be in yoga; to practice, to share, to teach, and mainly, to learn.
It’s a good fit.
In many ways I feel uncharistically relaxed around all the possibility that the yoga won’t work. The yoga always works when invited in. All manifestation starts in the quiet of our hearts and minds, say the sages. The beach chairs, that have been there for years, only became yoga props when we started doing yoga.
“if you can breathe, you can do yoga”, said one of the greatest yoga teachers of all, Krishnamacharya. We’re giving that big statement a little test run every Sunday. And I think so far, so good.
His adorable dog watched our every move today, which only added to the joy and playfulness of lunge salutes, modified sun salutations, and seated eye of the needles. And if you’ve never had savassana with your calves resting on a beach chair, in the open Hawaiian skies, with the sound of palm trees swaying, ocean waves rolling all while smelling ripe. plumeria, I highly recommend it.
