In The Family Of Things: Teaching a Private: Wailea: HI: March 21, 2021
Mary Oliver’s poem Wild Geese speaks to me in many ways. What catches my heart lately is last verse:
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting — over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
It’s not that I feel lonely, in fact I don’t feel empty at all. As a method to keep my anxiety in check during. the pandemic I have made an concerted effort to keep myself in good company, whether it be by myself, and, of course, with those whom I’ve ventured out in the wild world.
I’ve been selective.
One of the many definitions of yoga is relationship and my muses have been making You Tube videos, communal gatherings, though scarce, and then occasional hits insight into the perfect timing of spontaneous connection, like today.
These moments of realization are scarce. Today was one of them. It came at such a perfect time, and it was so powerfully healing I actually noticed the moment it was happening.
The Sunday Yogi has family in town, and two joined us for our yoga today. There is something especially endearing about family yoga, andI what I will always remember about today’s encounter was the imprint on my heart with a feeling of being part of. Part of the fun, part of the yoga, part of the larger community of family.
The pandemic keeps reinerating her lesson that we are all in this together. It’s now so overused it’s easy to tune out it’s powerful truth. Yoga helps me dial it in, meaning remember that we are all learning how to be together in the best of our ability. When I’m with people that help me feel love, I remember this is the high state of togetherness that ultimately is The Place.
It was easy today because I was with lovely folks. Does this set me up to carry this feeling forward where it can be challenging? You betcha. The “we are all in this together” lesson can be harsh and unrelenting, and maybe that’s partly what makes us want to dial down it’s volume. but today it wasn’t. Another boon, I surmise, of keeping good company.
